Overcoming the Silence: Shakira’s Journey Back to the Stage After a Vocal Cord Hemorrhage

She is fully prepared to team up with Jennifer Lopez for the Super Bowl LIV halftime performance in Miami on February 2nd.

In 2017, Shakira experienced a frightening ordeal when she was unable to sing due to a vocal cord hemorrhage, leaving her worried that she may never be able to take the stage again.

During a recent conversation with The Guardian, a 42-year-old vocalist from Colombia opened up about her unexpected struggle with losing her ability to sing. The singer expressed how her voice is closely tied to her sense of self, making it particularly challenging to cope with the silence. She revealed that this loss caused her to experience deep periods of depression, making it difficult for her to even get out of bed at times.

In order to find her voice again and prevent more damage, Shakira admitted to going through times where she decided to remain silent. She described herself during this time as feeling “pessimistic” and “bitter.” She also mentioned that she believed she required either medical intervention or a miraculous healing to restore her voice.

Although medical professionals recommended surgery, the musician chose to explore alternative treatments like meditation, hypnosis, and holy water from Lourdes.

In the end, her voice returned on its own accord, no surgery required. She likened the experience to a deep and almost magical moment in an interview with The Guardian.
